Convert between world currencies with an editable exchange rate.
Currency conversion multiplies the source amount by the exchange rate. In practice, banks and money transfer operators quote a rate that is slightly worse than the mid-market rate — this spread is their profit. This calculator lets you enter the mid-market rate and apply an explicit fee so you can compare the true cost of different transfer methods.
Basic conversion
Amount in target currency = Amount in source × Exchange rate
After transaction fee
Net amount = Converted amount × (1 − fee rate)
The mid-market rate (sometimes called the interbank rate) is published by XE.com, Google Finance, and Bloomberg. Your bank's retail rate will be slightly worse. For wire transfers, Google 'mid-market rate [currency pair]' immediately before transacting.
Live rates change by the second and require an API key with ongoing subscription costs. More importantly, the rate you'll actually transact at depends on your provider, amount, and account type — a live mid-market rate would give a false sense of precision. Enter the rate you've been quoted for an accurate calculation.
Banks and brokers set a buy rate and a sell rate that bracket the mid-market rate. The difference between them is the spread. On a $10,000 transfer, a 2% spread costs $200 — equivalent to a $200 fee but harder to see because it's embedded in the rate rather than itemised.
Compare the effective exchange rate (what you get ÷ what you send) across providers including your bank, specialist services (Wise, Revolut, OFX), and local bureaux de change. Total cost = fees + spread. Use this calculator with each provider's offered rate to compare directly.
