Work out deep drawing force instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Deep drawing force is commonly taken as pi x cup diameter x thickness x tensile strength x (blank/cup ratio - 0.7). The empirical 0.7 accounts for the fact that not all of the blank has to be drawn in. Blank holder force is typically about 30 percent of the draw force: enough to prevent wrinkling without locking the metal in place.
Drawing force
F = pi x d x t x UTS x (D/d - 0.7)
Blank holder
F holder = about 0.3 x drawing force
F = pi x d x t x UTS x (D/d - 0.7). Deep drawing force is commonly taken as pi x cup diameter x thickness x tensile strength x (blank/cup ratio - 0.7).
A draw ratio above roughly 2.0 tears the wall. Deeper cups are made in successive redraw operations, each reducing the diameter by 20-30 percent.
This calculator takes 4 inputs: Blank diameter, Drawn cup diameter, Material thickness, Material tensile strength. The pre-filled defaults are a realistic worked example — replace them with your own site or project figures.
