Plan an evening workout routine.
Evening training is fine for sleep provided there is a gap between finishing and lying down: core temperature and adrenaline both need time to fall. Around ninety minutes is the usual minimum after vigorous work, so the latest start time is derived by working back from bedtime through the cool-down, the shower and that buffer. The gap, not the hour on the clock, is what decides whether the session costs you sleep.
Evening session timing
Finish time = start + session + cool down; gap = bedtime - finish time; latest start = bedtime - 90 minutes - session - cool down
These figures are estimates based on population-average formulas and are intended for training and recreational planning only. They are not medical advice. Consult a qualified health professional before starting or changing an exercise programme, particularly if you have an existing medical condition.
Moderate evening exercise generally does not, and can improve sleep. Vigorous work finishing within an hour of bed is the pattern most likely to delay sleep onset.
At least an hour, ideally ninety minutes or more after hard sessions, to let core temperature and heart rate come down.
Keep the last portion of the session easy, shower warm rather than hot, and dim the lights afterwards. Consistent late training is far better than no training.
