A multi-city itinerary is longer than the sum of its stays. Four cities at three nights each is twelve nights, but the three transfers between them plus the outbound and return travel days push the real trip length noticeably higher. The transfer count is always one fewer than the number of cities, and the average time per city — total days divided by cities — is the honest measure of whether the itinerary leaves room to actually see anything.
Transfers
Legs = cities − 1; transit days = legs × transfer hours ÷ 24
Total
Total days = cities × nights per city + transit days + outbound and return days
Travel times are planning estimates. Check timetables, border-crossing times and connection requirements for each leg before committing to an itinerary.
You only move between cities, so a four-city route has three inter-city legs. Getting to the first city and home from the last is handled separately by the outbound and return travel days.
Three nights gives roughly two full days once arrival and departure are accounted for. Two nights is a stop rather than a stay, and anything under that spends most of the time in transit.
Count the hours, but note that an overnight leg replaces a hotel night rather than adding a day. Reduce nights per city accordingly if you sleep in transit.
