Plan networking activities.
Networking is a two-stage funnel and both stages leak. A quarter of well-researched approaches get a reply, and perhaps 60 percent of those replies turn into an actual conversation — so the overall rate is around 15 percent and eight new contacts requires roughly 54 approaches. Working that backwards is what turns a vague intention to network into a weekly number, and it also shows the honest time cost.
Outreach volume from a contact target
Overall rate = reply rate x conversion rate; outreach needed = ceiling(target contacts / overall rate); hours = outreach x minutes each / 60
Fifteen to thirty percent for personalised approaches with a specific, easy-to-answer request. Generic template messages sit under five percent, and warm introductions through a mutual contact frequently exceed seventy.
Be specific about why this person and ask for something small. A named piece of their work plus a single concrete question outperforms any amount of flattery, and it costs the same twelve minutes.
At twelve minutes each that is around eleven hours a month, which is sustainable but not trivial. If it is too much, lower the contact target rather than dropping the research — volume without personalisation collapses the reply rate.
