A bird's human-equivalent age is derived from how much of its species' typical lifespan it has reached, scaled to an eighty-year human span. Species like budgies and larger parrots age at very different rates. Comparing a bird against its own species lifespan prevents comparing a budgie and a macaw on the same scale, which would badly misstate maturity.
