Plants in a row is the usable length divided by spacing plus one, because both ends get a plant. Recalculating the actual spacing from the whole number of plants distributes any remainder evenly rather than leaving a gap at one end.

plants = floor((length - 2 x margin) / spacing) + 1; actual spacing = usable length / (plants - 1)
Spacing describes the gaps, and n plants have n-1 gaps. Forgetting this leaves the last plant off the end of every row.
