Work out sheet metal weight instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Sheet weight per square metre is thickness in millimetres times specific gravity, because one millimetre of a material with density 1 g/cm³ weighs exactly 1 kg/m². Mild steel therefore gives 7.85 kg/m² per millimetre, stainless 8.00 and aluminium 2.70.
Weight per area
kg/m² = thickness mm x specific gravity
Sheet weight
kg = length m x width m x kg/m²
kg/m² = thickness mm x specific gravity. Sheet weight per square metre is thickness in millimetres times specific gravity, because one millimetre of a material with density 1 g/cm³ weighs exactly 1 kg/m².
At about a third the density of steel, aluminium at the same thickness weighs a third as much, which is why it is preferred where support loads or handling govern.
This calculator takes 4 inputs: Sheet length, Sheet width, Sheet thickness, Material. The pre-filled defaults are a realistic worked example — replace them with your own site or project figures.
