Line marking paint is bought by volume but consumed by area, so the calculation runs through painted area: line length times line width converted to metres. Coverage rates vary widely — concentrate diluted for grass covers far more than ready-mixed paint on synthetic surfaces — and multiplying by markings per season is what turns a single job into a purchasing decision.

A full-size pitch has roughly 800 metres of line. At 100 mm wide and 8 m2 per litre that is about 10 litres per marking, or 60 litres across a season of weekly remarking.
Proportionally, yes. Going from 100 mm to 120 mm raises consumption by a fifth for no benefit unless the competition requires it.
Grass absorbs paint and needs more per square metre, concentrates are diluted before use, and synthetic surfaces need a specific paint that must not clog the pile.
