Estimate tennis match duration.
Tennis has no clock, so match length is built up from games. A set typically runs 9 to 13 games depending on how many are broken, and a game averages 4 to 6 minutes at club level once serves, rallies and changeovers are counted. Multiply games by minutes per game, add the breaks between sets, and a best-of-three match lands around 90 minutes — which is why court bookings are usually sold in that block.
Tennis Match Time
Duration = sets x games per set x minutes per game + (sets - 1) x set break
Derived figures
Hours = minutes / 60; per set = total minutes / sets
These figures are population-average estimates for training and recreational planning only and are not medical advice. Individual responses vary widely. Consult a qualified health professional before starting or significantly changing an exercise programme, particularly if you have any medical condition. Official dimensions, rules and timings should be confirmed against the governing body for your sport.
It counts games rather than minutes of play: sets multiplied by average games per set gives the total games, each game is costed in minutes, and the breaks between sets are added on top.
Court hire, floodlight time and league scheduling all need a duration, and tennis is one of the few sports that cannot give you one in advance. An estimate built from games is the closest you get.
Roughly 4 minutes for quick service games and 6 or more for long deuce games. Best-of-three at club level is typically 75-120 minutes; professional five-set matches routinely pass three hours.
