Work out honey extraction yield instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Honey in the comb is frames x honey per full frame x the fraction actually capped, since uncapped cells are unripe and should not be extracted. Centrifugal extraction leaves 5-10% behind in the cells, and that residue is recovered when the wet combs are returned to the hive.
Extraction yield
Honey in comb = frames x kg per frame x capped %; extracted = in comb x extraction efficiency
Honey moisture above about 20% ferments and fails food standards. Test moisture with a refractometer before bottling and store in food-grade containers.
Uncapped honey is above 20% moisture and will ferment. Mixing it into a batch risks spoiling the whole lot and failing moisture specifications.
Return them to the colonies in the evening for cleaning, which recovers the residue and saves the bees rebuilding wax. Do not leave them exposed, as that triggers robbing.
