Work out kayak load capacity instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Manufacturer capacity is the weight at which the kayak still floats, not the weight at which it performs. Working capacity is 70-90% of that depending on conditions, because a heavily loaded hull sits low, becomes sluggish and takes water far more easily in waves.
Kayak capacity
working maximum = stated capacity x conditions factor; remaining = working maximum - paddler - gear
Stated capacity is a flotation limit. At that load the hull is deeply immersed, freeboard is minimal and handling degrades badly in any sea state.
Low and near the centre, balanced fore and aft. Weight high or at the ends makes the kayak unstable and hard to turn.
