Work out molarity to percent instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Molarity converts to percentage in two steps: multiply by molar mass to get grams per litre, then divide by ten for percent weight in volume. Percent weight in weight also needs the solution density. One molar sodium chloride is 58.44 g/L, so 5.84% w/v but only 5.62% w/w at a density of 1.04 g/mL.
Grams per litre
g/L = molarity x molar mass
Percentages
%w/v = g/L / 10; %w/w = g/L / (density x 1000) x 100
Because a litre of solution weighs more than a kilogram when the solute is dense. The difference grows with concentration.
Usually w/v for liquids and w/w for solids and semi-solids, but it is always stated explicitly because the values diverge.
