Downloading for offline viewing saves data in two ways at once. Offline copies are usually encoded below the peak streaming bitrate, and the transfer happens once no matter how often you rewatch. With even modest repeat viewing the combined effect is large — the more times a household replays the same children's film, the more the saving compounds.
Offline versus repeated streaming
Stream total = episodes x stream GB x views per episode; download total = episodes x download GB; saved = stream total - download total
Because services encode offline copies at a fixed standard or high quality rather than the adaptive maximum used for streaming. A download is typically 20-40 percent smaller than the same title streamed on a fast connection.
Only through the encoding difference, which is still a real 20-40 percent. The compounding benefit needs repeat viewing, so the saving is much larger for households with young children or a favourite series.
Most services expire them after 30 days, or 48 hours once you start playing. Re-downloading an expired title costs the full transfer again, which is why the views-per-episode figure should reflect views within the licence window.
