Camber sheds water off the carriageway. On a crowned section the fall applies from the centre to each edge, so the crown rise is half the width times the crossfall. Sealed bituminous surfaces use 2 to 2.5 percent, gravel 3 to 4 percent and earth roads up to 5 percent, because rougher surfaces need more slope to drain.
