A shift from 22:15 to 06:00 crosses midnight, so the raw subtraction is negative and a day must be added - giving 7.75 gross hours. Deducting a 30 minute unpaid break leaves 7.25 paid hours. Getting the midnight wrap wrong is the single commonest error in night-shift timekeeping.
