Find study hours needed per credit hour.
The credit hour is defined by expected total effort, conventionally one hour of contact plus two of independent study per credit per week. That ratio is not fixed: introductory courses often need less and advanced quantitative courses commonly need three or more. Applying the level-appropriate ratio and multiplying by semester weeks gives the total time commitment, which is the figure to check enrolment against.
Independent study
Independent hours per week = credit hours x study ratio, where the ratio is 1.5 introductory, 2 standard, 3 advanced
Total commitment
Total weekly = independent hours + contact hours; semester total = total weekly x semester weeks
It is embedded in the definition of the credit hour used by accrediting bodies, which specify a minimum total student effort per credit combining contact and independent study.
Problem-based and quantitative courses demand practice time that scales with difficulty rather than with contact hours. Laboratory courses also carry write-up work outside the timetabled session.
