An indoor volleyball court is 18 by 9 metres with a free zone of at least 3 metres on all sides, so the space a hall must provide is more than double the playing area. Beach courts are smaller at 16 by 8 metres because sand slows movement. Indoor competition also requires at least 7 metres of clear height above the whole playing area, which is the constraint that rules out many general-purpose halls.
