Available seat kilometres is the industry's capacity unit: seats multiplied by the distance they are flown, summed over every flight. Revenue passenger kilometres is the same figure multiplied by load factor, and the ratio of the two is exactly the load factor.
Capacity metrics
ASK = seats x distance x flights; RPK = ASK x load factor
Because a seat flown 5,000 km consumes far more resource than one flown 500 km. ASK weights capacity by distance, making cost comparisons meaningful.
