Each cooking volume unit is defined as a multiple of the millilitre, so the conversion runs in two steps: multiply by the source unit's factor to reach millilitre, then divide by the target unit's factor. One factor per unit covers every pair in the list. Cups differ by country: 250 mL metric, 236.6 mL US and 284 mL imperial, which is why baking recipes travel badly.
