Work out fuel additive dose instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Fuel additives are specified as a treat ratio — 1 part additive to 2000 parts fuel is a typical detergent or cold flow dose. Dividing fuel volume by the ratio gives the additive quantity, and the cost per litre of treated fuel is the figure to weigh against the benefit claimed.
Additive dose
Additive volume = fuel volume / treat ratio; cost per litre of fuel = additive cost / fuel volume
Rarely. Overdosing detergents can cause deposits and injector fouling, and overdosing cold flow improvers gives no further depression of the pour point. Follow the supplier's specification.
Cold flow improvers must be dosed above the fuel's cloud point with good mixing, before any wax has formed. Adding them to already-clouded fuel does not work.
