Youth sports registration is the advertised cost and rarely the largest one. Tournaments are where the money goes: four events at 60 dollars entry plus 45 in travel and food is 420 dollars, more than double the registration fee. Uniform and equipment are one-off but recur as the child grows, and boots or protective gear can be replaced twice in a growth year. Expressing the total as a monthly figure across the season is what makes it comparable with other activities and with the household budget — and it makes clear that the decision to enter or skip two tournaments is worth more than any equipment saving.

Share travel with other families, buy equipment second-hand or through club schemes, and choose which tournaments to enter rather than all of them. Many clubs also have hardship funds that are not advertised.
