Tiles cover a module equal to the tile plus one grout joint, so a 300 × 300 mm tile on a 3 mm joint occupies 303 × 303 mm and 10.9 tiles fill a square metre. Waste is unavoidable: perimeter cuts, door thresholds, pipe penetrations and the odd tile that breaks on the cutter. Tiles are also sold in whole boxes, so the practical answer is the box count.

On small tiles it does. A 3 mm joint on a 100 mm mosaic changes the count by about 6%; on a 600 mm tile the same joint changes it by well under 1%.
