Traffic intensity in erlangs is total occupancy time divided by the observation period, so 500 calls of 210 seconds in an hour is 29.2 erlangs — meaning on average 29 circuits are busy. It is a dimensionless measure of demand and is the input to every Erlang formula. CCS, still used in North America, is simply erlangs multiplied by 36.
