Absences bite in two ways, and this models the direct one: the attendance component of the grade. Absences within the allowance are ignored, then each further absence costs its share of the attendance score, which is blended with your work grade at whatever weight the syllabus assigns. A ten percent attendance weight sounds trivial until you see that five misses out of forty, with three allowed, still shaves half a percentage point off the final grade — and that the free absences you have left is the number worth tracking.

Attendance score = 100 - (absences beyond the allowance / total classes x 100)
Blended grade
Final grade = other work x (1 - attendance weight) + attendance score x attendance weight
Usually far larger. The lost material shows up in exam performance, which this calculation does not attempt to model — it only prices the attendance component itself.
Most policies exclude authorised absences from the penalty but still expect the material to be caught up. Enter only unauthorised misses in the absence field if your syllabus works that way.
