See how honors courses affect weighted GPA.
Course weighting adds a bonus to the grade point for advanced courses, typically 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, and the effect on the overall GPA depends on what share of your schedule those courses represent. Two honors and one AP course out of seven adds two bonus points spread across seven courses, lifting the GPA by about 0.29 — meaningful but well short of the full bonus, which is the point students most often misjudge. The rigor share is arguably the more important output, since admissions offices recalculate GPAs on their own scale but read course rigor directly from the transcript.
Bonus points
Bonus = honors courses x honors weight + AP courses x AP weight
Weighted GPA
Weighted = unweighted GPA + bonus points / total courses
An illustrative estimate only. Grading scales, GPA weighting, honours thresholds and progression rules are set by your institution and vary between programmes and academic years. Confirm all figures with your course handbook, registry or academic adviser before relying on them for any academic decision.
Because the bonus is spread across your whole schedule. A 1.0 bonus on one course out of seven adds 0.14 to the average, not 1.0. Weighting rewards a pattern of rigorous course selection rather than a single advanced class.
Many recalculate it on their own scale, because weighting schemes vary so much between schools that weighted GPAs are not comparable. What travels reliably is the transcript itself — which courses you took at what level — which is why course rigor matters more than the weighted number.
