The 20 m multi-stage fitness test starts at 8.5 km/h and rises 0.5 km/h each level. The Ramsbottom equation converts level and shuttle into VO2 max: level 10 shuttle 5 gives about 47.7 ml/kg/min at a final speed of 13 km/h. It is popular because it tests many athletes at once and reaches a genuine maximum.
Ramsbottom equation
VO2max = 3.46 x (L + S / (L x 0.4325 + 7.0048)) + 12.2
Level speed
speed = 8.5 + 0.5 x (level - 1) km/h
This is an estimate from population-average equations, not a medical or diagnostic assessment. Individual results vary with genetics, training history and technique. Seek advice from a qualified coach or clinician before making significant changes to training.
Because it rewards the ability to decelerate and turn as well as aerobic capacity, so agile athletes score above their true VO2 max.
Level 9 is average for an active adult, level 12-13 is a good team-sport athlete and above level 15 is elite endurance territory.
