Field of view is sensor width times working distance divided by focal length. Fitting the part with 10-20% margin each side is normal practice, because part-to-part position variation and fixture tolerance mean a tightly framed part will occasionally clip the edge.

FOV = sensor width x working distance / focal length; magnification = sensor width / FOV
10-20% of the part size, more if the part is loosely located. Clipping an edge invalidates a measurement entirely.
It reduces perspective error and lets the camera sit clear of the process. The cost is more sensitivity to vibration and less depth of field.
