Fleet utilisation has two dimensions: how often vehicles run, and how full they are when they do. Multiplying them gives overall asset utilisation, which is typically far lower than the time figure alone and is the honest measure of whether the fleet is the right size.
Time utilisation
Time % = Vehicle days used / (Vehicles x Days in period) x 100
Overall utilisation
Overall % = Time utilisation x Average payload utilisation
Payload utilisation, because it needs no reduction in service. Running fuller vehicles less often is almost always cheaper than the reverse.
80-90% for a well-managed fleet allowing for maintenance and weekends. Above that, breakdown cover becomes a real constraint.
