Total packaging cost per unit is the primary pack plus the secondary and tertiary costs divided by units per case. Increasing units per case dilutes case and pallet cost per unit, which is why case count is one of the most effective packaging cost levers available.

Cost per unit = primary pack cost + (case cost + pallet cost) / units per case
Case, wrap and pallet costs are per case, not per unit. Going from 12 to 24 units per case halves that whole component per unit, often more than any negotiated material saving.
Compare on a delivered basis. A lighter pack that reduces cases per pallet can raise freight cost per unit more than it saves in material.
