Semester GPA is the credit-weighted mean of grade points, not a simple average of course grades - which is why a strong result in a five-credit course moves the number far more than the same grade in a two-credit one. Courses with zero credits are skipped rather than dragging the average down.

Points = credits x grade point value

GPA = sum of grade points / sum of credits
Usually they carry credits but no grade points and are excluded from GPA. Enter zero credits for them so they do not distort the calculation.
A withdrawal normally carries neither credits nor points. A failing grade, however, counts as zero points against its full credits and hits the average hard.
