Work out total chip power instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Total power is dynamic plus leakage plus IO, all divided by voltage regulator efficiency because the platform must supply the regulator losses too. At 88% efficiency a 71 W chip draws 81 W from the board, and that extra 10 W still has to be cooled.
Total power
chip power = dynamic + leakage + IO; socket power = chip power / regulator efficiency
Because the loss is dissipated on the board next to the chip, often inside the same cooling zone, and it counts against the platform power budget.
Increasingly so. High-speed SerDes can consume 5-15 pJ per bit, so a chip with terabit-class IO spends tens of watts just moving data.
