Work out distance from pedometer instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
When stride length is unknown it can be estimated from height: about 0.415 of height for normal walking, rising to 0.45 when brisk and 0.60 when running. A 175 cm adult walking normally has a 0.73 m stride, so 8500 steps is about 6.2 km. Measuring directly is always better, but this is the standard fallback pedometers use.
Stride from height
stride = height x factor (0.415 normal walking)
Distance
distance = steps x stride
This is an estimate from population-average equations, not a medical or diagnostic assessment. Individual results vary with genetics, training history and technique. Seek advice from a qualified coach or clinician before making significant changes to training.
Faster walking lengthens each step as well as increasing cadence, so a fixed stride would understate brisk-walking distance by 8-10%.
Reasonably - leg length correlates strongly with height - but individual variation of 10% is normal.
