Library fines accrue per day after a grace period and stop at a per-item cap, beyond which the item is usually treated as lost and replacement cost is charged instead. Knowing where the cap sits tells you when returning the item stops reducing the charge.

Most libraries convert the charge to a lost-item fee covering replacement cost plus processing, which is far higher than the fine cap.
Renewing before the due date resets the clock. Renewing after it usually does not remove fines already accrued.
