Marks needed to pass is the pass threshold in absolute marks less what you have already secured. Expressing the balance as a percentage of the marks still available is what makes it meaningful — needing 88 of 200 remaining marks is very different from needing 88 of 100.

Passing marks = Total marks available x Passing mark %
Marks needed
Needed = max(0, Passing marks - Marks secured)
Then check each component's threshold separately. Many courses require both an overall pass and a minimum in the final examination.
Usually the resit mark is capped at the bare pass, so the overall grade cannot be improved beyond the threshold.
