Work out rolled throughput yield instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Rolled throughput yield is the probability a unit passes every step first time: step yield raised to the number of steps. The difference between units started and RTY output is the hidden factory — work that is done, undone and redone without appearing in scrap figures.
Rolled throughput yield
RTY = (average step yield)^number of steps
Hidden factory
Units touched = starts x (1 - RTY); cost = units touched x rework cost
Final yield counts units that eventually shipped, including those reworked several times. RTY counts only units that never needed intervention, which is the honest measure of process capability.
For a 20-step process, 90% RTY needs 99.5% average step yield. Long processes therefore demand extremely capable individual steps, which is why RTY exposes problems that final yield hides.
