Work out steps to kilometres instantly with clear inputs, formula shown and shareable results.
Distance is simply step count times stride length. At the common default of 0.762 m, 10,000 steps is 7.62 km, and it takes about 1312 steps to cover a kilometre. Stride length varies with height and pace, so measuring your own over a known distance improves accuracy considerably.
Distance from steps
distance = steps x stride length
Steps per kilometre
steps = 1000 / stride length
This is an estimate from population-average equations, not a medical or diagnostic assessment. Individual results vary with genetics, training history and technique. Seek advice from a qualified coach or clinician before making significant changes to training.
Walk a measured 20 m at normal pace, count the steps and divide. Repeat a few times and average.
Different sensor positions and algorithms. Wrist devices tend to count arm movement, hip-worn devices count trunk oscillation.
